Any change of season brings colds and flu. And having a cold is horrible. Being all bunged up, snotty nosed and teary eyes are horrible. And when it’s flu, the headaches and body pains are horrid.
You can go to your local health care practitioner for medical advice and if your symptoms are severe, you should. But you can also go the alternate health care route and try diffusing essential oils to fix your cold or flu. There are several essential oils that have been well researched and are really good to use for the cold. They will soothe your symptoms and if you catch your cold in time, essential oils can stop it from developing into full blown flu.
Here is a list of our favourite essential oils
Lemon Essential Oil
Lemon has extraordinary healing qualities and a good cup of hot lemon tea can do wonders to cleanse your system. Lemon essential oil goes one step further, working as an excellent anti-viral agent. Lemon oils act as excellent decongestants and clear your nasal canals. A lemon essential oil can also work to purify the air around you. Lemon essential oils are excellent for colds and flu, and also for allergies.
Lavender Essential Oil
Who doesn’t love the smell of lavender? It not only smells good but the oil extracted from the purple flowers is really good for you. Lavender oil has anti-inflammatory properties and you can apply the oil to your sore spots. A symptom of flu is sore muscles and a little bit of lavender will help. Lavender is extremely relaxing and a few drops on your pillow will help you get to sleep, despite your congestion.
Thieves Essential Oil
Thieves works so well to combat chest infections, sinus, stuffy noses and sore throats. It’s a blend of eucalyptus, cinnamon, clove, lemon and rosemary. These ingredients work together and have anti-bacterial qualities, anti-viral and anti-infection qualities. My wife and I diffuse them all day using our essential oil bracelets.
Peppermint Essential Oil
And my favourite, Peppermint essential oil, works well to soothe pain and headaches, reduce fever and ease congestion. If you have a headache, rub a little of this oil on your temples. If you have a fever, rub it on your temples and your feet. And if you are congested, rub the oil on your chest. It will ease your blocked sinus, reduce your fever and make you feel better in general.
Oregano Essential Oil
Oregano is a pretty powerful herb and is known to have good anti-bacterial qualities. As an essential oil, Oregano Oil can be as effective as an antibiotic, except it is all natural. A few drops in water or juice can ease the symptoms of a sore throat, stop a virus from spreading and stop infection.
Chamomile Essential Oil
Chamomile is really soothing and will always help you sleep. Even better than Chamomile Tea, Chamomile essential oils can also be used for aches and pains. Rub a little on your temples, or your back, or your feet, and feel you muscle aches melting away. You can also add a few drops to your bath. If you know how to make a compress, then use hot water and chamomile, and apply it to your aching areas for a while.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Eucalyptus is very often used in cough drops, ointments and cold and flu medication. It will definitely help you clear your stuffy nose and congested chest. Eucalyptus can be applied to the tips of your nose to ease your breathing, or to your chest and shoulders. Add a few drops to a compress and breathe it in or use an essential oil aromatherapy diffuser.
All these essential oils can be added to a diffuser. If you don’t have a diffuser, buy one today. Get a few oils and not only will you start to feel better quickly, but your house will smell really good too.
